The History & Heritage of Puerto Galera
From Trading Post to "Port of the Galleons"
Long before modern tourism, Puerto Galera was an essential trading post where native Mindoro inhabitants traded hardwood, resin, and gold with Asian merchants.
In 1570, Spanish conquistador Martin de Goiti entered the sheltered natural harbor. Recognizing its natural protection against rough seas, the Spaniards established it as a primary anchorage for the Manila-Acapulco Galleon Trade and named it "Puerto Galera" (Port of the Galleons).
Puerto Galera is far more than a beach getaway, it is one of the Philippines' most historic maritime gateways and a globally recognized natural treasure. Knowing its history and diverse titles reveals why this coastal haven continues to captivate travelers from around the globe.

1973
Recognizing its rich terrestrial and marine ecosystem, UNESCO officially designated Puerto Galera as a Man and the Biosphere Reserve (MAB) under its global environmental program.
This landmark status established the town—often called Galera by locals—as a protected sanctuary, laying the groundwork for sustainable marine preservation and eco-tourism.

Named One of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World
In 2005, Puerto Galera achieved international recognition by being officially inducted into the prestigious Les Plus Belles Baies Du Monde (The Most Beautiful Bays in the World) association, a club supported by UNESCO.
Celebrated as the Pearl of Mindoro and the Heart of Asia, the town's sweeping coastal topography—where verdant tropical mountains meet crystal-clear ocean waters—solidified Galera as a world-class travel destination

The "Poor Man’s Boracay" Travel Boom

As domestic tourism exploded in the 1990s, White Beach earned the popular moniker "Poor Man's Boracay" (and Boracay of Mindoro).
Budget-conscious travelers and students flocked to Puerto Galera for its accessible white sand, lively nightlife, and island vibe—offering a Boracay-style getaway at a fraction of the cost without needing a domestic flight.

Anchor to the world-renowned Verde Island Passage, Puerto Galera is globally celebrated as the official Diving Capital of the Philippines, featuring over 30 premier dive sites from shallow coral gardens to thrilling drift wrecks.

Offering effortless access via Balatero Port, it perfectly merges vibrant beachfront nightlife at White Beach, serene luxury retreats in Aninuan, and world-class marine conservation into a single island escape just hours from Manila.
